Little Baby is an honest film made with equal honesty

Hollywood has explored the subject of father daughter relationship in many ways over the years with different films like Father of the Bride, Definitely, Maybe, Jersey Girl and many more, whereas Bollywood has not yet tapped this genre much, except for movies like Daddy and Piku.

Adding to the list, Little Baby tries to explore this territory. Does it succeed? Read on to find.

Little Baby is the story of Sasha (Gulnaz Siganporia) and Dushyant Singh (Priyanshu Chatterjee). Sasha studies in a college and Dushyant is a senior police officer in Dehradun. Sasha is a girl who lives her life on her own terms; she is aggressive and does not care about anybody including her parents. She parties hard and does not mind sleeping with anybody as she thinks that she has all the rights to take decisions of her life. One day Dushyant comes to know about her activities during a police raid and his world comes crashing down. In this situation how he manages to understand her problems and tries to mend Sasha’s behaviour makes the rest of the film.

Little Baby is based on the thought of what generation gap and misunderstanding between the parents and children can lead to in a family. Little Baby manages to convey the message convincingly to the audience. The film keeps the narrative simple and to the point as what it wants to say. Screenplay (Shekhar S Jha, Rashid Iqbal, and Siddarth Saigal) is devoid of any melodrama which comes as a breather.

Priyanshu Chatterjee as the helpless father has given a very controlled and mature performance. From a lover boy in Tum Bin to Dushyant Singh of Little Baby is quite a remarkable change in terms of acting performance. Debutant Gulnaz Siganporia is confident but very loud in her acting. She has a long way to get the right mix of acting, expressions, and language correctly. Rest of the actors do their job aptly as required.

Director Shekhar S Jha has selected a very mature and sensitive subject which is very relevant in today’s times. His grip on handling the emotions shows in many scenes. One of the scenes which stand out is when Sasha is desperately searching for her father and breaks down after finding him. Very few directors have chosen such subject of a father and daughter relationship. Daddy is perhaps the only other film which can be benchmarked for comparing Little Baby with.

Editor Aseem Chhabra has been good in keeping the film’s length to optimal and not letting it out of hands in the entire duration of the film. Aniket Khandagale’s cinematography is refreshing as he captures the scenic beauty of Dehradun.

Little Baby is an honest film made with equal honesty. We have not seen many films on the father-daughter relationship in Bollywood and if you are the father of a girl then it makes a compelling watch to understand feelings of today’s teenagers. It also makes an interesting watch for youngsters to realise that parents always want good for them.
