India and Japan moved to deepen their strategic partnership on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held talks in New Delhi amid a wider push to expand cooperation in security, technology and economic sectors.
The meeting at Hyderabad House came during Takaichi’s three-day official visit to India from July 1 to 3. She is in the country for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, which is expected to review the full range of bilateral ties and take up regional and global issues of mutual interest.

The two leaders first held bilateral talks before delegation-level discussions began at Hyderabad House.
The Indian side included External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, among other officials.
India-Japan Annual Summit to review strategic partnership
Takaichi was earlier accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X, “Further strengthening our special partnership. PM Sanae Takaichi of Japan was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. A partnership for the future, built on trust and rooted in shared values.”
During the reception, PM Modi introduced his Cabinet colleagues and other dignitaries to the Japanese Prime Minister.
The Japanese side also acknowledged the welcome. In a post on X, the Japanese Cabinet Public Relations Officer said, “Our heartfelt thanks for your warm welcome. We are very much excited to be visiting India!”
Another post said, “The welcome ceremony has just concluded, and Prime Minister Takaichi will hold a summit meeting with Prime Minister Modi afterward.”
Security, technology and supply chains on agenda
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will give both leaders an opportunity to strengthen cooperation across strategic, economic, technological and security domains.
The visit is expected to focus on investment, innovation, stronger economic ties and resilient supply chains in critical sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals.
Diplomatic sources have also indicated that the discussions are likely to cover maritime security, defence technology cooperation and the development of an “Industrial Value Chain” connecting the Bay of Bengal and India’s Northeast.
Takaichi’s visit follows PM Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit.
Both countries have continued to build their Special Strategic and Global Partnership as they respond to evolving regional and global challenges.
