A Swedish skier was on Thursday killed and another injured as the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg was hit by an avalanche. The other skier was rescued from under the snow by a team of the Army.

Police identified the killed skier as Daniel and the injured as Benjeman, both Swedish nationals.

The skiers were trapped in an avalanche near the second stage of the gondola cable car ride to the Affarwat peak in Gulmarg.

Teams of the Army and police swung into action and succeeded in rescuing Benjeman, who was rushed to the hospital in an injured condition.

The authorities had on 17 January issued an avalanche warning in seven districts of Kashmir, including Baramulla, Kupwara, Banipura, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Anantnag and Budgam.
