A Kolkata court on Saturday reportedly summoned senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor over his ‘Hindu-Pakistan’ remark.

According to media reports, advocate Sumeet Chowdhury had filed the case alleging Tharoor’s comments had hurt religious sentiments and insulted the Constitution.

The court has asked Thiruvananthapuram MP to appear in before it on August 14.

On Wednesday, Tharoor addressed a lecture on ‘Threats faced by Indian democracy and secularism’ in Thiruvananthapuram and said, “If the BJP goes on to mark a repeat of their current strength in the Lok Sabha in 2019, then it will pave the way for the tearing up of the Indian constitution and result in the creation of a ‘Hindu Pakistan’.”

The Congress on Thursday disapproved of Tharoor’s remarks and cautioned its leaders to choose words carefully while rejecting the saffron party’s “hatred”.

Congress’ communication in-charge Randeep Surjewala, in a series of tweets, had said, “India’s values and fundamentals are an unequivocal guarantee of our civilisational role & set us apart from the divisive idea of Pakistan.”

“All Congress leaders must realise this historic responsibility bestowed upon us while choosing words and phraseology to reject BJP’s hatred,” he said.

Surjewala attacked the Modi Government, alleging that it thrives upon “an unprecedented atmosphere of division, bigotry, hatred, intolerance and polarisation” for the last four years.

He asserted that the Congress represents India’s civilisational values of pluralism, diversity, compassion and harmony between faiths and ethnicities.
