Delhi Police have apprehended two criminals, including an international fugitive identified as Miraj alias Mehraj, following an exchange of fire that took place in the national capital, a police official said on Friday. Miraj was the mastermind of the dacoity as well as a recent armed robbery at Preet Vihar in East Delhi where the victims were robbed at gunpoint by the criminals.

The police had intel on Miraj, who was on the run in connection with his involvement in a Rs 2 crore dacoity case which took place in Ashok Vihar. According to a senior police officer, it was on Thursday night that the criminal was intercepted in Dhulsiras area in Dwarka District where he, instead of surrendering to the police team, opened fire in a bid to escape.

However, the accused got injured by police’s retaliatory fire, and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was under treatment, the police said. Following the encounter, police nabbed Miraj and  Shakir, and also recovered two handguns from them. Miraj is a resident of Delhi’s Nand Nagri while Shakir belongs to West Bengal’s Gobadda, District 24 Parganas.

In May 2023, during early hours, five masked armed dacoits had barged into the house of a businessman in Ashok Vihar while the family was asleep.

The victim had a paper trading business and had an office on the ground floor while he lived with his family on the first floor of the building. They entered through an office where they did not find anything initially, and later when the family woke up with the noise, the criminals held the entire family captive at gunpoint. They further forced the family to reveal where the cash and valuables were kept, and later decamped with cash and jewellery.

Police had arrested other accused, however, Miraj was absconding in the case. The armed dacoits were carrying firearms,  knives and house breaking instruments.
