The three-day meeting of the Akhil Bhartiya Pratinidhi Sabha, highest decision making body of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), began in Nagpur on Friday. Over 1500 delegates are participating in the event.

The meet will set the agenda for the RSS and its affiliate organisations for the next year. BJP president Amit Shah, who was in Tripura on Friday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government there, will also attend the RSS conclave. “During the closed-door meeting the progress report of last year’s work will be presented,” said a source.

On Day 1, the RSS passed a resolution on protection and preservation of Indian languages. “Sangh wants preservation and development of all Indian languages and dialects,” said the source. This proposal is important in the backdrop of the anti-Hindi agitation in Karnataka.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Praveen Togadia is also participating in the meeting. On his recent charges about the Gujarat government being lax about his security, Togadia said: “l will respond to all the questions after three days but here only RSS office-bearers will speak.”

The election of the new RSS general secretary (sar karyawah) will be held at the meeting here as the tenure of the incumbent, Suresh (Bhaiyyaji) Joshi, has been completed. Joshi has held this position for three consecutive terms. An RSS functionary said: “There is a chance of Dattatreya Hosabole being the new general secretary but a final decision is awaited.”

Hosabole is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The tenure of the general secretary is for three years. The new general secretary will select his team, including joint general secretaries (sah sar karyawaha) and members of the executive committee.

Sar karyawaha is the second highest office in the RSS heirarchy as well as the highest elected office. The election of the new general secretary is of crucial importance in view of the Lok Sabha polls of 2019.
