Kunwar Bai Yadav, the 106-year-old woman hailed as an ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission in Chhattisgarh, passed away on Friday, 23 February. She was admitted to the ICU in Dhamtari district hospital on 19 February and was shifted to Raipur’s BR Ambedkar hospital yesterday, 22 February.

“Pained to learn that Shrimati Kunwar Bai who was like a mother to our state and was honoured as an ambassador of cleanliness in Chhattisgarh by the PM is no more. This is just the end of Ma Kunwar Bai’s body. She will be remembered forever for her work,” tweeted Chief Minister Raman Singh.

Singh had spoken to her family members via video call from New Delhi after learning about her illness and assured all help from the government for her treatment.

In 2016, Kunwar Bai became a household name in the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched her feet at an event in Kurrubhat village and asked the media to follow her and not him.

The centenarian had sold seven of her goats – her only assets – to raise money for a toilet at her house in the village located in Dhamtari district of the state. Her effort was recognised as the district became the first in the state to be declared Open Defecation Free.
