The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on World Theatre Day extended her best wishes to everyone connected with theatre and “jatra” and said Bengal is the “home of theatre”.

Banerjee in a tweet said, “Today is World Theatre Day. My best wishes to everyone connected with theatre and jatra. #Bengal is the home of theatre and the Bengal government is active in providing encouragement and assistance to theatre in the state”.

World Theatre Day was first observed in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI).

It is celebrated annually on the 27 March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community all over the world. Various national and international theatre events are organised to mark this occasion.

According to ITI,   the World Theatre Day is a celebration for those who can see the value and importance of the art form “theatre”, and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value to the people and to the individual and have not yet realised its potential for economic growth.
