The Trinamul Congress on Sunday asked the Central government to publish a white paper on the money actually released to West Bengal for MGNREGA and housing for the rural poor in 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023- 24. Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of the party challenged the BJP leaders to take part in a debate at the place of their choice and date and face him and answer the questions raised by him.

Trinamul leaders said the Centre had said it sanctioned the money but never said anything on the amount they had released. “Allotment of money and releasing it are not the same thing,” they alleged. Party leaders said if the BJP had the guts it should give details of the cheque numbers and the date when the money was released. Chandrima Bhattacharya came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he had been making false statements just to confuse people.

The Prime Minister had said in 2022 that the income of the farmers would double within two years. Two years have passed and now he says that it would double by 2028, Ms Bhattacharya said. “Mamata Banerjee did not make any promise, but the income of the farmers has trebled. Now they are getting Rs 2 lakhs annually,” she said. She said the Trinamul Congress always stands by the people and as the Centre did not pay the job card holders, Mamata Banerjee took steps and cleared the dues.

Similarly, if the Centre does not give the money, houses of 11 lakh people will be built in phases at the state government’s expense, she said.
