Trinamul Congress MP, Abhishek Banerjee today came down hard on the state Congress chief, Adhir Chowdhury and the BJP leader, Subhendu Adhikari.

Addressing a TMC rally for the bye-election on 27 February in Sagardighi Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, Mr Banerjee termed both Adhir Chowdhury and Subhendu Adhikari as traitors of politics.

“Adhir Chowdhury enjoys the security cover of CRPF because he has no faith in ‘Didi’s police (the state police of Mamata Banerjee government). He holds faith in Dada’s police (Home minister, Amit Sha of Narendra Modi government at the Centre). Adhir is a traitor such that will not be born in coming 500 years”, said Mr Banerjee, also the TMC’s general secretary.

He asked the gathering: “Have you ever seen him (Adhir) speaking against Amit Shah or any other BJP leader? Why does he keep silent on NRC issue in Parliament?”

Mr Banerjee produced a poster on the dais apparently to prove his point against Subhendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly.

The TMC leader claimed that the poster features Bayron Biswas, the bypoll contestant of the Congress party being flanked by Subhendu Adhikari.

Mr Banerjee also played an audio clip on his mobile phone alleging that the BJP leader, Subhendu Adhikari made claims in the audio clip of ensuring zero TMC votes in minority belts of Sagardighi.

The BJP set agencies like ED, Income Tax department etc on TMC MLA, Jakir Hossain and tobacco baron, Mustak Hossain of Pataka Bidi company but such central agencies will never be set on the Congress contestant, Bayron Biswas who runs a number of companies because the Congress leaders like Adhir Chowdhury are agents of the BJP, Mr Banerjee alleged.

The TMC MP made an appeal to the rally to ensure a convincing victory of the Trinamul Congress in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

“I shall uproot BJP from Meghalaya and Tripura,” he said.

He also promised a hike in the wages of bidi labourers from the current rate of Rs. 168 to Rs. 240 per 1000 tobacco rolls (bidi).

In response to Mr Banerjee’s comments, Mr Adhir Chowdhury said the Trinamul Congress, which he called a party of looters, is crying foul as it sniffs defeat at Sagardighi.
