The accused labourer who was arrested from Katihar in Bihar in connection with the gruesome murder of elderly Mukherjee couple at their Netaji Nagar residence is believed to have committed the crime alone. The accused, Md. Hamruj Alam, was brought to the city on transit remand and he has been remanded to police custody till 16 August.

Lalbazar sources said he has confessed to his crime during interrogation and has not revealed the involvement of any other person in the killings and robbery.

“No further arrests have been made in the case yet. He may have done the crime alone and his statements so far match the leads given by our forensic experts,” said an investigating officer.

However, the police are not ruling out the possibility of the involvement of other persons in the murder. Alam has also confessed that he perpetrated the crime out of greed. Some looted items, including the wristwatch belonging to Dilip Mukherjee, the mobile phone of his wife Swapna Mukherjee and Rs 38,000 cash have been recovered.

Police said Alam had crept into the Mukherjee house in a drunken state on the night of 29 July through the main gate at about 9 p.m. and he crouched under the staircase. He strangulated the elderly woman when she came downstairs to lock the gate. Then he went upstairs, overpowered and killed the old man before looting whatever articles and cash he could lay his hand upon. CCTV footage showed him fleeing the spot with a bag at around 11 p.m.
