Medical students of the National Medical College and Hospital came forward in support of their professor and TMC East Burdwan candidate Dr Sharmila Sarkar and urged people to ensure her victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Emphasising upon Dr Sarkar’s profound impact on both education and community service, students advocated for her victory as a candidate.

This comes on a day, Friday, before Trinamul national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is scheduled to hold a Jonogorjon Sabha in Katwa in support of her candidature. This will be his 5th Jonogorjon Sabha following the historic Jonogorjon Sabha at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.

Ankita Salui, one of her students, praised Dr. Sarkar’s exceptional teaching prowess and her commitment to representing the medical fraternity in politics. “We are proud that she got a chance to take the problems of common people to the Centre. She was already serving society as a doctor and now she will be doing the same work on a larger platform. It is a proud moment for us as a medical faculty member is a part of active politics now. We support her in her fight and wish her all the best,” Salui remarked.

Sujoy Manna, a final-year student and a resident of the constituency, spoke of Dr Sarkar’s holistic approach to student welfare, citing her invaluable support for mental well-being. “Sharmila ma’am has mentored us not just in the education field but also guided us towards ensuring our mental well-being. We have known her for a long time and are also attached personally to her because of counselling. Dr. Sarkar’s background in psychiatry enables her to understand the needs of her constituents deeply and this will ensure her victory,” he said, adding that he wants Dr Sarkar to be elected from his home constituency.
Beyond the students, Dr Sarkar’s peers and colleagues also expressed unwavering support for her. Reflecting on their shared medical journey, renowned child specialist Dr Mithun Ghosh, Dr Sarkar’s batchmate, lauded her commitment to social causes.

“I have known her for the past 26 years since our college days at the RG Kar Hospital. Since she comes from a humble middle-class family, after getting a medical degree, she dedicated her life to social activities. I want to congratulate her for becoming an MP candidate. She has been a fighter and has helped people in various causes. I am sure her hard work and belief in herself will take her a long way in fulfilling aspirations of the people of her constituency,” he said.
