Alexandra Eala just delivered the biggest win of her career. The Filipina star upset defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2 on Saturday, booking her spot in the fourth round of Wimbledon for the very first time.

Eala, seeded 29th and only 21 years old, became the first player from the Philippines to reach the second week of a Grand Slam. She delivered the win with a composed and fearless performance on Centre Court, a stage that carries weight for any player, let alone one making history for her country.

Building on an earlier upset

This is not the first time Eala has beaten Swiatek. According to the WTA, this victory improved her overall head to head record against Swiatek to 2-1. It also marked her seventh career win over a Top 10 opponent.

Sixteen months earlier, Eala had first announced herself on the tennis world stage by beating Swiatek in Miami. But this win at Wimbledon, on tennis’s biggest platform, surpassed even that earlier breakthrough.

Inside the opening set

The first set alone lasted 84 minutes and kept shifting back and forth between the two players. Swiatek grabbed the first break to lead 2-1 early on, but Eala answered right away and later broke again to move ahead 5-3.

Swiatek was not ready to let go easily. She fired off string of powerful forehand winners to level the set and forced tense tie-break. She even earned two set points during that tie-break. But Eala held her composure, saved both chances, and eventually clinched set on her fourth set point after Swiatek sent forehand long.

Taking control in the second set

Eala carried her momentum straight into the second set by jumping out to 4-0 lead. Her aggressive returns, sharp passing shots, improved serving kept the pressure firmly on Swiatek.

The Polish star managed to claw back one break and pushed hard in a lengthy final game, but Eala stayed composed under pressure. She saved four break points in that final game before finally sealing the win with a forehand winner on her third match point.

The numbers behind the win

Eala finished the match with 24 winners against 21 unforced errors. Swiatek, playing a more aggressive game overall, ended with 32 winners but also committed 44 unforced errors.

On break points, Eala converted five of her seven opportunities and defended well under pressure, saving eight of the eleven break points she faced from Swiatek throughout the match.

Billie Jean King sends her praise

The win didn’t go unnoticed by tennis legends either. Former American world number one Billie Jean King shared a post on X celebrating Eala’s achievement.

King wrote that it was a treat spending time with Eala fresh off her historic Wimbledon win, calling her the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16. She described Eala as a genuine inspiration for kids in the Philippines and around the world, encouraging her to keep going.

What’s next for Eala

Eala will now face 13th seed Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round. Paolini reached this stage after cruising past Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-2, marking the sixth time she has reached the second week of a Grand Slam.

There is also a bit of unfinished business between the two. Eala previously defeated Paolini earlier this year in Dubai, meaning the Italian will be looking for a measure of revenge when the two meet again at Wimbledon.
