Mumbai woke up to a red alert on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department warning of continued heavy rain across the city and neighbouring Raigad district. The alert, valid for three hours, came after a night of relentless downpour that left several parts of the city struggling to cope.
Mumbai recorded more than 250 to 300 mm of rainfall in just 23 hours in some parts of the city. The IMD has forecast moderate to intense spells of rain continuing across the region, suggesting the wet spell is far from over.

As the rain continued through the weekend, a balcony of a dilapidated building in Belapur village, Navi Mumbai, collapsed. Reports indicate structure was already in severely weakened condition before the collapse.

Thane city also felt brunt of the downpour with several areas reporting significant waterlogging. The situation added to the growing list of disruptions across the wider Mumbai metropolitan region as the rain refused to let up.
Despite the intensity of the rain, Western Railway confirmed that train operations continued without disruption. Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek explained that the Western Railway suburban network recorded rainfall exceeding 250 mm since Saturday night, with certain sections seeing rainfall between 150 and 200 mm.
He noted that the heaviest rain coincided with high tide timing, particularly during the early morning hours. Despite this combination, he confirmed that both local train operations and long distance train services continued uninterrupted throughout the ordeal.
In Ghatkopar’s Vikrant Circle area, a large tree was uprooted early in the morning, crushing a car beneath it. According to a local resident, the tree had been a known hazard for a while.
The eyewitness told ANI that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had been informed about the tree roughly eight days earlier. He said a BMC official had come to register the complaint at the time, but no follow up action was taken afterward.
The same eyewitness confirmed that four vehicles were damaged when the tree came down, though thankfully no casualties were reported from the incident. His account raised questions about the gap between the initial complaint and the eventual outcome, since the tree ultimately fell despite the earlier warning.
