A man allegedly killed his 21-year-old sister over a purported love affair she had with a man from their village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, police officials said on Monday, June 1.

The 25-year-old honour killing suspect was later arrested by police after an encounter. Officials have identified him as Amir, PTI reported.

According to police, Amir murdered his own sister, Adiba, by slitting her throat as he allegedly opposed her relationship with a local youth. The victim used to speak to the person over her mobile phone, officials said.

On Sunday, Amir had a major argument with his sister after which he allegedly killed her for tarnishing the family image in the society, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar told reporters.

Following an encounter, police personnel took Amir into custody and seized the weapon that was believed to have been used in the crime.
