In Uttar Pradesh, the recent murders of 17-year-old Surya Chauhan in Ghaziabad’s Khoda area and Vineet Rai, son of a hotelier in Ghazipur, have yet again put spotlight on the law and order situation in the state.

In the Ghaziabad murder case, the main accused, Asad, was killed in a police encounter, while authorities even initiated proceedings against properties linked to him as part of the investigation. However, in Vineet Rai’s case’s case, the accused continue to remain at large.

Vineet Rai’s father, Alok Rai, has even blamed the police inaction against an alleged extortion racket for the incident. Speaking to IANS, he alleged that members of the police force are in “nexus” with the gang members.

The family members have demanded encounter and bulldozer action against the accused – similar to the Surya Chauhan murder case.

As per investigators, the prime suspect in the case is associated with the alleged “Katra Gang”.

“He (the accused) is a criminal type of a person and operates a gang named ‘Katra gang’. His house is located 100 metres north to our hotel and right behind the hotel is the house of the village Head (Pradhan) whose brother also leads this gang,” Alok Rai said.

He further alleged that the village head provides shelter to the gang members. “This incident has been carried out together by all of them,” Vineet’s father said.

Further, he stated that the accused demanded extortion from his family before killing his son.

“They (accused) initially demanded ₹20 lakh from us for running the hotel in the area and then increased it to ₹1 crore… I had written applications to the DGP, ADG Varanasi, SP Kotwali, and even the Chief Minister regarding the incident and even sent reminders but no action was taken on it,” Alok Rai said.

Complaining of “police nexus” with the extortion gang, Alok Rai has alleged that certain police officials “actually helped the gang to operate”.

“The law-and-order situation in Ghazipur is zero,” he claimed.

This comes as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday, June 1, condemned the recent Ghaziabad incident and said, “Stabbing someone under the guise of friendship is completely unacceptable.”

His remarks were made in the context of the murder of Surya Chauhan in Ghaziabad’s Khoda area.
