A quiet surveillance room inside Anna University in Chennai turned into an unexpected controversy hub on election day, April 23. A contract-based CCTV operator, Yuvaraj, who was assigned official poll duty, has now been detained after allegedly watching a leaked version of Vijay’s much-talked-about film ‘Jana Nayagan’ during his shift.
What made the situation worse was that he didn’t just watch it privately. He reportedly recorded and shared photos and videos of himself doing so on social media.

The incident has added another twist to an already troubled journey for the film, which has been stuck in delays, leaks, certification issues for months.
CCTV duty turns into online controversy
Yuvaraj was working as a temporary CCTV operator assigned to election surveillance duty at Anna University during the Tamil Nadu election process. His role was to monitor security feeds from control room as part of election-day arrangements.
However instead of focusing on surveillance responsibilities, he allegedly accessed and watched leaked HD version of ‘Jana Nayagan’ inside the control room.
The matter escalated further when he shared visuals of himself watching the film on Facebook. These posts included both pictures and short video clips. He had also previously shared his election duty identity card on April 9, identifying himself as CCTV head assigned at Anna University.
Authorities detained him after the posts came to light, as the act raised concerns about misuse of official duty space.
Leak of ‘Jana Nayagan’ sparks cybercrime action
The controversy surrounding Yuvaraj is not isolated. ‘Jana Nayagan’ itself has been in trouble since April 9, when a high-definition version of the film leaked online without official release.
The leak triggered a major response from Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime police, who arrested nine people in connection with the incident. Among them were three key accused individuals.
Investigations revealed that one of the main suspects was a freelance editor who allegedly gained unauthorised access to the film footage and uploaded it on the internet.
Following the leak, the film industry also took internal action. The editor of ‘Jana Nayagan’, Pradeep E Ragav, faced suspension from an editor’s association. The association stated that he had collaborated with a freelance editor who was not officially part of the film body.
