The leak of ‘Jana Nayagan’, one of the most talked-about Tamil films in recent times, has now led to major breakthrough. Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has arrested three key accused in connection with the online piracy case.
The arrests were made on April 15 after a detailed technical probe. What began as scattered pirated clips online has now exposed a deeper trail of access abuse, data copying, and rapid circulation across illegal networks.

Freelance editor behind the breach: Reports
According to officials, the main accused was not a stranger to the film world. He was reportedly working as a freelance assistant editor on another project and is alleged to have misused his access at an editing studio.
Investigators say he managed to obtain unauthorised access to ‘Jana Nayagan’ footage. From there, he is believed to have copied the reels, processed them into a complete version, and passed them on to others.
This chain reaction allegedly led to the film spreading quickly across piracy platforms. The arrested trio has been produced before court and sent to judicial custody.
Earlier arrests and widening probe in the piracy network
This is not the first action in the case. Earlier, six people were already arrested for their role in circulating and uploading pirated versions of the film.
Authorities are continuing digital tracking operations, identifying links that helped the film spread within hours once it surfaced online.
Court action and massive setback for Vijay’s film
The leak caused major shock in the industry, especially because high-definition clips including key scenes began appearing online on April 9, even before the film was cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Soon after, the full movie landed on multiple illegal platforms, creating a serious setback for the production.
‘Jana Nayagan’, widely seen as Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his expected political transition, has suffered significant damage due to the piracy wave.
In response, the Madras High Court issued an interim injunction directing internet service providers and cable operators. It asked to block any unauthorised or uncertified versions of the film from being streamed or broadcast.
At the same time, authorities have already taken down hundreds of piracy links. Officials have also warned the public that downloading, sharing, watching pirated content can lead to legal action.
