Malayalam director Ranjith arrested again: New sexual assault claim follows previous harassment cases

Malayalam director Ranjith was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening. The arrest comes after a woman actor accused him of attempting to sexually assault her on a film set.

According to police, the woman alleged that Ranjith lured her into a caravan during shooting and tried to sexually assault her. The complaint, lodged with Kochi City Police on Monday, prompted swift action.

Police moved carefully, keeping the case and proceedings under wraps to protect the complainant. Ranjith was picked up in Idukki district and is currently held in Thodupuzha, with plans to transfer him to Kochi soon.

The woman’s statement was recorded at the Women’s Police Station on Monday, setting the legal wheels in motion.

A troubling pattern

This is not the first time Ranjith’s name has surfaced in allegations of sexual misconduct. The director previously had his name in the Justice K Hema Committee report on harassment and abuse in the Malayalam film industry.

That report painted grim picture of culture where powerful men often escape accountability. And it had cited Ranjith’s actions among those causing fear and distress in the industry.

Old cases resurface

Ranjith’s history of harassment allegations goes back years. In 2024, a Bengali actress filed complaint with Kochi City Police. She accused him of inappropriate touching with sexual intent during the filming of ‘Paleri Manikyam’ in 2009.

He had attempted to secure anticipatory bail. But the Kerala High Court closed the plea after police indicated that the old offence could be bailable.

Some in Malayalam cinema remain silent. Others have quietly condemned such abuses of power. Critics say Ranjith’s repeated brushes with allegations highlight a systemic problem of influential men in cinema often exploiting aspiring actors shielded by fame and connections.
