After an early burst that briefly raised hopes of a faster arrival, the southwest monsoon now appears set to make its official entry into Kerala around June 4, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall and weather alerts across the state over the coming days.

The expected onset marks the beginning of the country’s crucial four-month rainy season. Meteorologists say atmospheric conditions have become increasingly favourable for the monsoon’s advance over Kerala and adjoining regions, bringing with it the likelihood of sustained rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds.

According to the IMD, conditions are conducive for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and additional areas of the Bay of Bengal around June 4.

Speaking to ANI, IMD scientist Neetha K Gopal said the required weather parameters for declaring the onset are almost in place, and rainfall activity is expected to intensify from Tuesday evening.

“The conditions for the onset of the monsoon are getting ready, so we can declare it on 4th June. We will witness a good amount of rainfall from this evening. In the coming seven days, all parts of Kerala will be under Orange or Yellow alert as we expect a heavy spell of rain,” Gopal said.

Heavy rain alerts likely across Kerala

The weather department has indicated that most parts of the state could remain under either Orange or Yellow alert during the next week as rainfall activity strengthens.

Gopal also urged caution, particularly in vulnerable and hilly regions where prolonged rain could increase the risk of weather-related disruptions.

“We need to be concerned if heavy rains continue. Orange alert with restrictions will be there for hilly regions,” she added.

Nine districts already under yellow alert

The latest forecast comes a day after the IMD issued a Yellow alert for nine districts, warning of heavy rainfall and localised weather disturbances.

The districts under alert are Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Idukki, Ernakulam, Wayanad and Kannur.

Apart from heavy rain, the IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds in parts of southern India over the next few days. Kerala and Lakshadweep are expected to witness significant rainfall activity as the monsoon progresses.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged locations and follow directions issued by local authorities.
