Senior BJP leader Sanjay Tandon has expressed gratitude to Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory Chandigarh Gulab Chand Kataria for approving the enhanced monthly honorarium for numbardars in Chandigarh.

The decision came as a significant relief to the traditional village functionaries whose demand for revision of wages had been pending for several years.

In a statement, Tandon said consistent efforts made over time to secure improved financial support for numbardars have finally borne fruit.

He noted that the issue had been repeatedly taken up with the UT Administration, highlighting the need to ensure fair compensation in view of rising living costs and expanding administrative responsibilities.

Tandon stated that numbardars serve as an important link between the administration and residents in Chandigarh’s villages. They assist government departments in revenue-related matters, dissemination of public information, verification processes and coordination during welfare schemes and emergency situations.

Enhancing their honorarium, he said, acknowledges their contribution to grassroots governance and strengthens local administrative outreach.

Welcoming the Administrator’s positive and responsive approach, Tandon said that the decision reflects the UT Administration’s commitment to supporting traditional institutions that continue to play a crucial role in rural administration even in an urbanising Union Territory like Chandigarh.

He further hoped that the move would boost morale among numbardars and enable them to perform their duties more effectively in service of the public. He also reiterated his commitment to raising issues concerning village communities.
