Senior BJP leader Sanjay Tandon led a delegation to Punjab Governor-cum-Administrator, UT Chandigarh Gulab Chand Kataria to submit a detailed representation seeking the immediate restoration of the B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) Self-Financing Course at Government Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, for the Academic Session 2026–27.

Sharing details, Tandon said that the delegation urged the Governor to intervene and ensure the continuation of the long-running, highly sought-after and financially self-sustaining course. The memorandum also called for implementation of the approved intake of 70 seats, as already proposed by the Director Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration and academically approved by Panjab University.

However, despite these approvals, the enhanced intake was never implemented. Instead, the course was initially discontinued for the Academic Session 2025–26. It was restored only after affected students approached the Hon’ble Court, but with the original intake of just 30 seats instead of the approved 70, informed Tandon.

Notably, the B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) course, introduced in 2007, has consistently attracted strong student interest and has provided excellent employment and entrepreneurship opportunities to young women. In recognition of its sustained popularity, the Director Higher Education had approved an additional unit of 40 students in September 2024, increasing the proposed intake from 30 to 70 seats. Panjab University subsequently granted the necessary academic approval in June 2025.

According to the memorandum, the course is not only academically successful but also financially sustainable. Based on the financial viability statement submitted with the representation, the programme is projected to generate a net surplus of approximately ₹9.34 lakh during 2026–27, with the annual surplus expected to exceed ₹1.02 crore by 2028–29 if the intake is increased to 70 students.

The delegation emphasised that the course plays a significant role in promoting skill development, entrepreneurship, employment generation and economic self-reliance among young women. It directly supports the objectives of flagship Government of India initiatives including Skill India Mission, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), SAMARTH, PM Vishwakarma, Stand-Up India and the vision of Nari Shakti.

Tandon said, “Such a successful, employment-oriented and financially viable course should not be discontinued. This programme has empowered hundreds of young women over the past two decades by equipping them with professional skills and opening avenues for employment and entrepreneurship. We have requested the Hon’ble Governor to ensure that deserving students are not deprived of this valuable educational opportunity.”

The delegation requested the Governor to direct the restoration of the B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) Self-Financing Course in the Admission Prospectus for the Academic Session 2026–27 and approve the already proposed intake of 70 seats.

The delegation comprised Simar Prabh Kaur, Dr Preeti Alagh, Sakshi Sharma, Pratibha Thapa, Manpreet Kaur, and Heena Narang all Assistant Professors.
Badri Parshad Kaushik, Vibhag Parmukh, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), Chandigarh was also part of the delegation.
