In a striking demonstration aimed at drawing attention to animal suffering in the food industry, a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and Ashray Foundation staged a powerful protest at Parivartan Chowk in Lucknow on Wednesday.
The activist, wearing a skin-toned bodysuit stained with fake blood, was suspended from a hook next to mock carcasses of a pig and a goat.

The intense visual display was designed to confront passersby with the harsh realities faced by animals killed for food and to urge people to reconsider their dietary choices.
According to PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Apeksha Tamane, humans have the moral ability to choose compassion over cruelty. She emphasized that animals, like humans, experience pain, fear, and a desire to live, and should not be reduced to mere products for taste. The organisation appealed to the public to adopt kinder eating habits and shift toward plant-based foods.
PETA highlighted that animals such as pigs and goats are intelligent and emotionally sensitive. Pigs are known to recognize their names, show empathy, and even dream, while goats are playful, clever, and capable of solving simple problems. Despite these traits, millions of animals are subjected to extreme confinement and inhumane treatment in industrial farming systems.
The organisation pointed out that many animals are slaughtered in painful ways, often while still conscious. Chickens used for eggs are kept in cramped cages, and male chicks, considered economically unviable, are routinely killed soon after hatching.
Similarly, male calves in the dairy industry are separated from their mothers early and often face neglect or slaughter. Transport conditions for cows and buffaloes are also described as harsh, with overcrowding frequently leading to injuries.
Beyond animal welfare, PETA India stressed that a vegan lifestyle can also benefit human health by lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. The group added that animal agriculture significantly contributes to environmental issues such as water pollution and excessive land and water use.
Citing global environmental concerns, PETA supports a shift toward plant-based diets as a way to help mitigate climate change.
To encourage change, PETA India offers a free vegan starter kit for those interested in transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle.
