Who said family drama should stay inside the house? One Tamil film just packed its bags and went all the way to Berlin and cinema lovers are buzzing. ‘Members of the Problematic Family’ (Tamil title: ‘Sikkalana Kudumbathin Uruppinarhal’) has landed an official spot at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival.
And no, this is not just another festival entry. This one is special, historic, and a little juicy.

Berlin calls, Tamil cinema answers
The film has been selected for the Forum section of Berlinale, one of the world’s most respected film festivals. What makes it newsworthy? This is the first-ever debut film by a director from Tamil Nadu to make it to this section. First film. First time. Big deal.
Only three Tamil films before this have walked the Forum red carpet: Mani Ratnam’s ‘Alaipayuthey’, Ameer’s ‘Paruthiveeran’, and PS Vinothraj’s ‘Kottukkaali’. Now, R Gowtham joins this elite club. Not bad for a newcomer.
Meet the man behind the camera
Director R Gowtham is a first-timer, and he is clearly having his dream moment. The film was made fast, on a tight budget, and with pure passion.
Gowtham says the selection proves that Tamil Nadu’s creative scene is alive and kicking. From small villages to global screens, that’s the journey.
Leading the film is actor Karuththadaiyaan, who impressed audiences earlier in the award-winning film ‘Koozhangal (Pebbles)’.
What is the film really about?
The Berlinale jury dropped some heavy hints. The story begins with a young man’s death. There is a funeral, but not much sadness. Instead, the loss opens old wounds inside a family. Love, violence, silence, comfort. Everything swings back and forth. The jury called the film bold, subtle, and emotionally sharp.
Tamil cinema is becoming a regular guest on the global stage. Not once in a while, but consistently.
The 76th Berlin International Film Festival runs from February 12 to February 22, 2026. Keep an eye out.
