Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday reviewed the ongoing construction of the Rs 145 crore utility duct project, being developed along a 7-kilometre stretch from Chotta Shimla to Willies Park.

He directed officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) to ensure the timely completion of the project.

He also instructed that tarring of the road and installation of streetlights along the route be completed simultaneously to avoid delays.

“Shimla, being not only the capital but also a major tourist destination of Himachal Pradesh, must retain its charm,” Sukhu said.

“A city free from the clutter of overhead cables will offer a cleaner and more pleasant experience to visitors. This project is aimed at enhancing urban aesthetics while strengthening essential infrastructure,” he added.

The duct network, extending from Chotta Shimla to Willies Park, Secretariat via Raj Bhavan to Oak Over, and from Sher-e-Punjab through Lower Bazaar up to CTO, will house underground electric and water lines, along with other utility cables.

Once completed, the integrated underground system is expected to prevent frequent road digging, improve maintenance efficiency, and contribute to the long-term beautification and modernization of the city.
