As per a report on the Bar and Bench website, which tracks court proceedings, the incident happened when the CJI was hearing the mentioning of cases by lawyers.

It was reported that the lawyer in question approached the dais, removed his shoe, and tried to throw it at the CJI.
However, he was swiftly prevented from doing so by the security personnel present in the court premises. The lawyer was then taken away.
The report quoted the lawyer as saying while being escorted out, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge (Will not tolerate insult to Sanatan).”
The CJI spoke following the incident and asked lawyers present in the courtroom to continue with the proceedings.
“Don’t get distracted by all this. These things do not affect me,” said CJI Gavai.
While it was not immediately clear why the lawyer tried to attack the CJI, the action was possibly triggered by Gavai’s recent remarks in a case related to the restoration of a beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho.
The CJI had then dismissed the case and said, “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archaeological site and ASI needs to give permission, etc.”
The remarks had triggered a lot of controversy, leading to the CJI issuing a clarification and stating he meant no disrespect: “I respect all religions…,” he had said.
