Trinamul Congress legislator Jafikul Islam of Domkal died Thursday after a prolonged illness, party officials said. He was 54.
Islam, a resident of Govindpur in Domkal municipality’s Ward 14, had been battling chronic liver disease, kidney complications and diabetes for several months. He breathed his last around 5.30 p.m. at a private hospital in Kolkata, hospital sources confirmed.

As the news of his death spread, supporters and locals gathered to pay respects. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief and conveyed condolences to Islam’s family.
