For the very first time, Papua New Guinea has chosen a film to represent the country at the Academy Awards. The film is ‘Papa Buka’, and with this, the Pacific island nation has stepped onto Hollywood’s biggest stage.

The honor goes to acclaimed Indian filmmaker Bijukumar Damodaran, known for his award-winning works like ‘Trees Under the Sun’. His latest film tells the story of Papa Buka, an elderly war veteran who becomes the guide for two Indian historians. Together, they uncover forgotten tales of World War II that connect India and Papua New Guinea through courage, sacrifice, and a shared human spirit.

Papua New Guinea is celebrating its 50th year of independence, and the moment could not be more symbolic. The announcement was made with great pride by Tourism, Art, and Culture Minister Belden Norman Namah, along with other key cultural leaders of the country.

Calling it a “historic moment for Papua New Guinea cinema,” Oscar selection committee chair Don Niles emphasized that ‘Papa Buka’ is more than just a movie.

“It represents our stories, our traditions, and our artistic voice,” he said.

Director Damodaran echoed that emotion. For him, ‘Papa Buka’ is a tribute to the bond between India and Papua New Guinea, forged in the difficult years of World War II and carried forward through art and storytelling.

“To be the first Oscar submission from PNG, during their 50th independence year, is a humbling honor,” he said.

The film itself is a rare collaboration. Produced by Noelene Taula Wunum (NAFA Productions), Akshaykumar Parija (Akshay Parija Productions), Pa Ranjith (Neelam Productions), and Prakash Bare (Silicon Media), it blends two worlds of India and Papua New Guinea into a single cinematic journey.

Leading the film is 85-year-old tribal leader Sine Boboro, who makes his screen debut as Papa Buka. Joining him are Indian actors Ritabhari Chakraborty and Prakash Bare. There are local talents like John Sike, Barbara Anatu, Jacob Oburi, Sandra Dauma, and Max Maso PPC.

Three-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Kej has composed the film’s music. Cinematographer Yedhu Radhakrishnan captures the landscapes and emotional depth of the story. The screenplay is co-written by Daniel Jonerdhagtt.

Audiences in Papua New Guinea won’t have to wait long. The film is ready for release in local theatres on September 19, 2025.

After that, it will travel to film festivals across the world before beginning its Oscar campaign in Los Angeles.
