Centre slashes petrol, diesel prices by Rs 2 per litre ahead of LS polls

Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Centre on Thursday reduced the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre. While making the announcement, Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the new rates will be effective from 6 am Friday.

After reduction in the fuel prices, Puri said welfare and convenience to Indians has always been Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal.

“By slashing petrol and diesel prices by 2 (per litre), prime minister Narendra Modi has once again shown that providing welfare and convenience to his family of crores of Indians, has always been his goal,” Puri wrote on ‘X’.

In a social media post on ‘X’, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said that the pan-India reduction in petrol and diesel prices will boost consumer spending.

“Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have informed that they have revised Petrol and Diesel Prices across the country. New prices would be effective from 15th March 2024, 06:00 AM,” it said.

The ministry further added, “Reduction in petrol and diesel prices will boost consumer spending and reduce operating costs for over 58 lakh heavy goods vehicles running on diesel, 6 crore cars and 27 crore two-wheelers.x

It said reduced petrol and diesel prices will benefit the citizens through more disposable income, boost for tourism and travel industries and control over inflation.
