The Indian Army said on Saturday that it will help in the investigations related to the alleged gang rape in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district after it was revealed that the main accused in the case is a serving member of the force.

The police said that a serving defence personnel reportedly stationed in Rajasthan is the main accused in the Rewari gangrape case. No arrest has been made so far even though three days have passed since a 19-year-old was allegedly gang raped.

“Main accused is a serving defence personnel stationed in Rajasthan. We are getting a warrant against him,” Director General of Police (DGP) BS Sandhu said in a statement.

Speaking to reporters, Lieutenant General Cherish Mathson, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Command, said that the Army will not shelter criminals in the force.

“If an army man is involved in the crime we will facilitate that the person is caught and booked for rape. We do not shelter criminals,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

The South Western Command is headquartered in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, Nazneen Bhasin, Superintendent of Police at Nuh, told the media that the medical examination of the victim had confirmed rape. She added that multiple teams had been formed to catch the men accused of rape.

“We’ve made multiple teams to nab the accused. I appeal to the people to give us any information they’ve regarding the case and have announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for those who help us in cracking the case,” Bhasin said.

The state police have set up a special investigation team (SIT), to be headed Bhasin, to probe the incident.

Mahendergarh Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said raids were being conducted in Rewari and Mahendergarh districts and neighbouring areas.

According to media reports, the girl was abducted by three men, but she was raped by more than 10 men once she was taken to a secluded place on Wednesday near Kanina village.

The victim has identified her attackers. Her parents had earlier accused the police of not taking action in the matter.
