Flash floods hit 56 villages in north Kashmir’s Kupwara
All government and private schools have been closed for tomorrow across Kashmir.
The much awaited Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held from February 15.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba on Tuesday tweeted; “I’m very pleased to announce that the long overdue Panchayat elections in J&K will be held from 15th February 2018. People in the state have always chosen ballots over bullets & will continue to do so”.

On Monday, Mehbooba Mufti called on J-K Governor NN Vohra at Raj Bhavan, to discuss several important matters in regarding Cabinet decisions taken a few days back. Mehbooba also informed about her J-K government’s decision to commence Panchayat elections from 15 February 2018.
The Panchayat elections were overdue for the past few years and were being postponed due to the bad security situation.
The Centre and also the Governor have been mounting pressure on Mehbooba to hold the Panchayat and other local bodies elections early.
Governor Vohra in his meeting with Mehbooba expressed his concern about the vital importance of ensuring prompt redressal of public grievances. Governor also pushed for the transparent functioning of entire administrative system in an accountable manner to promote public welfare.
Meanwhile, the J-K Panchayat Conference has demanded implementation of the 73rd amendment before the Panchayat elections in the state.
