Puri started working at a tea stall and a local dhaba at a tender age of seven. His father, who worked with the Railways, was sent to the jail on the allegations of theft of cement. Puri started working at an early age to take care of his family. The actor continued studying despite his long working hours. Om Puri's first film was a children's film titled Chor Chor Chhup ja. However, his first mainstream film was a Marathi movie titled Ghashiram Kotwal, which released in 1976. During the initial years in the industry, Puri was offered art films and he became an important part of it.
