"During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, many people joined the party and mostly the common people of the country," Kumar said.
"The Congress is always on the side of defence reform in the country but the NDA government is mowing the dreams of patriots who want to serve the country," he added.
The Congress exhorted people to express themselves, without being lured by doles, in the ensuing panchayat and urban elections in the state.
After joining Congress, the former CPI leader said, "I want to join the most democratic party in this country. The Congress party holds the history of this country in itself."
The Congress has decided to make it a high-profile induction with the presence of senior leader Rahul Gandhi during the joining of both the leaders.
Sources also said that during the talks in the past Kanhaiya Kumar had emphasised having his own teamwork with him in Bihar in order to start a movement in the state and then gradually take it to the national level.
The prosecution sanction was granted nearly a year after a city court asked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to take a decision within a reasonable time-frame.
In a statement, the party said it was confident that Kanhaiya Kumar would come out unscathed “as the charges are false and politically motivated”.
