Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata paid tribute to his former teammate, Wayne Rooney, as he called the 31-year-old striker a ‘legend of the game and the club’ on Monday.
United on Sunday confirmed Rooney’s move to Everton after 13 glittering years with the Red Devils, and a host of United stars, past and present, paid tribute to the club’s record goalscorer.
Rooney lifted the Community Shield, the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League in his final season at United and Mata uploaded a picture on his Instagram profile of the duo holding the continental trophy with the caption: “When we took that photo I hoped it was not our last trophy together, but unfortunately it seems to be. Thank you Wazza. You are undoubtedly a legend of the club and the game, but also a great person and teammate. All the best in your new chapter, you deserve it. I feel lucky, I've played with Wayne Rooney!! @manchesterunited @waynerooney #FarewellToALegend.”
