Over 30 children, aged between 7 and 13 years, were attending classes at tuition centre when the roof caved in, trapping all of them under the debris.
“So far, 14 bodies of children have been recovered from the debris,” PTI quoted Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran as saying.
According to reports, a female teacher was also among those taken to a nearby hospital, while rescue operation is taking place to search the rubble for any remaining victims.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has reportedly directed police and district authorities to identify those responsible for the collapse and start the criminal proceedings against them.
Kamran informed that part of the building was under construction, while labourers were working when the incident took place. “A part of the building was under construction and labourers were busy at work when the roof collapsed. We have arrested the contractor,” he said.
Lahore District Education Authority Chief Executive Officer Tariq Mahmood informed that the building had a private tuition centre that was run by a woman from the locality.
As per the Edhi Foundation, the roof of the academy in the residential building in the Basti Eid Gah locality of Kahna Nau area “collapsed suddenly”. “The bodies of the deceased were shifted to the morgue at General Hospital,” the NGO said in a statement.
