Hundreds of protesters took to the streets outside the United States consulate in Karachi, Pakistan on Sunday following news from Iran. Reports of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s death in a joint US-Israeli airstrike sparked anger and grief that turned the city center into a scene of unrest. Demonstrators tried to storm the consulate clashing with police and paramilitary forces. Authorities fired tear gas and used batons to control the crowd. At least nine protesters have died so far, with many others injured, according to local police.

Iran faces a national crisis

The protests in Karachi reflect the wider shock across Iran. Following Saturday’s coordinated strikes, Iran declared 40 days of national mourning. Black flags were raised at major shrines, and public gatherings are planned nationwide to honor Khamenei.

The airstrikes targeted a high-level meeting of Iran’s defense council. Iranian state television reported that Gen. Abdol Rahim Mousavi, chief of army staff, and Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh, defense minister, were among those killed.

Ali Shamkhani, head of the Revolutionary Guard and senior security adviser, was also reported dead.

The situation has sent shockwaves across the region. In Srinagar, hundreds of Kashmiri Shia Muslims held peaceful demonstrations, carrying portraits of Khamenei and raising anti-US and anti-Israel slogans. They also observed traditional mourning chants.
