Nine soldiers were killed when Taliban insurgents attacked an Army checkpoint in Afghanistan’s Nimroz province on Monday.

“Armed militants attacked the checkpoint in Khash Rod district along a main road, killing nine soldiers,” a government spokesman told Xinhua news agency.

Several militants were also killed and wounded during the gun battle, but their number could not be verified, he said.

One trooper was also wounded and the checkpoint was destroyed.
