Expressing his grief, Gandhi said, “It’s very sad for me to come here under these circumstances. I would have liked to visit under happier conditions.”
“SPF does not suspect any foul play,” the statement, released by the SPF’s Public Affairs Department, said.
Following massive public outcry, the Assam government constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by ADGP (CID) Munna Gupta to work in close coordination with the Singapore Police.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said Gogoi’s sudden outpouring of grief and demand for a central investigation into Garg’s death were politically motivated rather than genuine acts of admiration.
“The Petitioner seeks to invoke the extraordinary writ jurisdiction of this Hon’ble Court as the sentinel on the qui vive to protect his life, limb and personal liberty,” the petition stated.
Goswami, who had accompanied Garg on the Singapore trip and was present during the controversial yacht outing linked to the tragedy, has been taken into custody for questioning.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “I would also like to say: give the SIT some time. If the SIT can’t do anything and the people of Assam are not satisfied, we will seek to transfer the case to the CBI.”
Saikia demanded that the investigation be monitored by a sitting or retired judge of the Gauhati High Court, arguing that only judicial oversight could ensure accountability in what he described as a case filled with “suspicious circumstances”.
