Launching a broadside against Governor RN Ravi for calling Tamil Nadu a fertile ground for extremism, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and ruling DMK president on Wednesday retorted that his hubris and arrogance have to be put down.
Despite the apex court being averse to stipulating a deadline for the President and Governors, Stalin, taking to 'X', said "We will not rest until the Constitution is amended to set a deadline for Governors to assent to and clear Bills passed by the Assembly."
Reacting to the decisive victory of the Janata Dal (U) veteran, Stalin wished Nitish Kumar well in fulfilling the expectations of the people but blamed the Election Commission for its partisan actions.
“People are under compulsion to prove their Indian citizenship or else face the threat of disenfranchisement. The Election Commission has placed them under duress. So, wherever we go the discourse is about the ongoing SIR and the situation is such that we can’t remain silent by ignoring it.
“We are waging a relentless fight to prevent those who place religious fanaticism above all else from raising their ugly heads and obstructing the nation’s progress. The fight is against anti-democratic, fascist forces that oppress elected governments and undermine the will of the people,” Stalin said in a detailed rejoinder posted on X.
To a question on the Union government ignoring the state for the last 10 years and the DMK government remaining silent, he said “Despite that, we continue to be the number one state. Do not think we are keeping silent. It is a silent revolution. How much ever they ignore us, we are proving that we are forging ahead and remain the number one.”
Arriving at Düsseldorf on the second day of his visit to Germany after completing his engagements in Cologne, the Chief Minister was received by officials of the Rhine-Westphalia State.
Speaking at the marriage function of DMK Rajya Sabha MP and senior counsel NR Elango, the Chief Minister said he would be unveiling the portrait of rationalist reformer and Dravidian icon ‘Periyar’ EV Ramasamy at the prestigious Oxford University during his stay in London.
He lamented that the key recommendation of the Punchhi Commission, formed at the insistence of the DMK in 2007, that Governors should be appointed in consultation with the respective Chief Ministers has never been implemented.
