The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested ten fishermen, hailing from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, for allegedly trespassing into its territorial waters.
India, on Tuesday, lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka over an incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy during the apprehension of 13 Indian fishermen in the proximity of Delft Island in the early hours of this morning.
Ten Indian fishermen from Karaikkal in Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in the early hours of Thursday. The mechanised boat they were fishing in was also seized.
The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 16 Tamil Nadu fishermen on Tuesday near Nedantheevu, alleging that they crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and entered its waters.
According to Rameswram fishermen, around 2,500 people had gone fishing on Saturday evening and while they were fishing at Dhanushkodi near Talaimannar, the Sri Lankan Navy reached the spot and chased them away.
