In a series of tweets in Hindi, Mayawati said her party was compelled to take the decision following SP's attitude after Lok Sabha polls.
Earlier this month, Mayawati had said that her party will contest the bypolls on all 11 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh alone.
Addressing reporters a day after Mayawati formally announced the end of the alliance, Yadav said that his respect for the BSP supremo remains unshaken.
The BSP supremo said if SP chief Akhilesh Yadav succeeds in his political work, the BSP will once again join hands with the party.
Earlier, there were reports that Mayawati might meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the national capital on Monday ahead of the poll results on May 23.
Responding to PM Modi’s remark that the SP-BSP ‘mahagathbandhan’ is casteist, BSP chief Mayawati on Friday said that he is not an 'OBC by birth'.
The SP chief also accused the BJP of doing caste-based politics and spreading hatred among different castes and religions in Uttar Pradesh.
This is the first time in these elections that Mayawati has given clear indications about her aspirations for the Prime Minister's post.
"The BJP and the Congress are alike. We have not done any coalition with the Congress but to defeat the BJP, our coalition will vote for the Congress in Amethi and Rae Bareli," BSP supremo Mayawati said.
Yogi also said that the opposition has raised questions on the valour of the army.
