The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the School Service Commission (SSC) to ensure that no “tainted” or disqualified candidate takes part in the ongoing recruitment process for Classes XI-XII teachers.
Chittaranjan Mandol and Pradip Kumar Sur along with four other officials relating to the role played by former SSC chairman Subiresh Bhattacharya in the the alleged irregularities in recruitment of teaches in govt-aided schools.
Notably, the Supreme Court on September 30 extended the interim protection granted to Bhattacharya in connection with the alleged irregularities in primary teachers' appointments till further orders.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today quizzed the Vice Chancellor of the North Bengal University (NBU), Dr Subiresh Bhattacharya, in connection with the alleged corruption in the various recruitments under the School Service Commission (SSC).
The protestors have cited specific instances of corruption. They claimed that the officials were so powerful that they could recruit teachers in colleges which did not feature in the vacancy list.
Government control resulted in the recruitment of CPI-M cadres in the schools, who, in turn, became the backbone of the party's support base.
The state cabinet may also discuss the issue of the industries minister Partha Chatterjee who is under the CBI probing the School Service Commission scam.
The court did not concur with the argument of the secretary, school education department, that successive legal tangles had been holding up the appointment of hundreds of thousands of school teachers.
The education minister also stressed that the government is trying to rationalise the teacher-student ratio by removing teachers from schools where the number of students is low and placing them in schools where student density is high.
