Dutta, who switched over to the BJP in October 2019 and unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections from Bidhannagar earlier this year, losing to Sujit Bose of Trinamool, had given enough hints of severing ties with the saffron camp.
Speaking on Section 144 of CrPC imposed by the Yogi Adiyanath-led Uttar Pradesh government, the former Trinamool Congress MLA said, "This cannot be a method to throttle any movement. This is a democratic country. We are not living under a Taliban government."
Ghosh while reacting to Dutta’s joining the BJP told reporters : “We have been hearing for so many days that he will join our party. It will be important for us and him as well, if he joins tomorrow at the big event.”
The chief minister, who spoke to the MLAs on issues concerning their Assembly segments at the North 24- Parganas district administrative meeting held at Madhyamgram yesterday, ticked off the former Mayor of Bidhanangar Municipal Corporation, for not being astute enough to deal with such issues of concern when he was the mayor of the Bidhannagar civic body.
It is the right of the elected councillors to elect and remove a mayor, advocate general Kisor Datta submitted. A process of removal has been initiated against the mayor, it was submitted.
The nearly four-month long drama over Bidhannagar Mayor and Trinamul Congress dissident leader Sabyasachi Dutta is headed towards a climax with the party clipping his wings and asked him to quit its fold, in addition to empowering the municipal corporation's deputy mayor to take over most of the mayoral responsibilities.
With the benefit of hindsight, one could argue that the inner-party rivalry between real estate syndicates has contributed not a little to the latest kerfuffle not the least because Dutta's bete noire and a rival real estate activist, Sujit Bose, ~ now a minister of state with one-time CPI-M membership as part of his CV ~ was present at Sunday's meeting when the factional infighting was palpable enough.
