Ranjan Gogoi retired as CJI on November 17, 2019. He took oath as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha in March this year.
Gogoi’s nomination has definitely caused eyebrows to be raised, said the CM, adding that any sensible person would be against such a move by the Government.
The NDA government appointed another former CJI, P Sathasivam, as Governor of Kerala in 2014, a few months after he demitted office.
The Home Ministry had on Monday issued a notification announcing that President Ram Nath Kovind is nominating Gogoi to fill the vacancy originating due to retirement of one of the nominated members.
Senior advocate Rajeev Dhawan, however, strongly pitched for granting respect to Lord Ram and Allah in a diverse country like India on the 29th day of the hearing in the politically sensitive case.
Justices Krishna Murari, SR Bhat, V Ramasubramanian and Hrishikesh Roy were administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
The court has also issued notice to the Centre in this matter.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister can visit four districts, including Srinagar, Jammu, Baramulla, Anantnag -- to meet people.
The court will also hear other petitions that deal with issues related to Jammu and Kashmir post the revocation of the special status granted to the state by the Constitution.
