Addressing a ''Veterans’ Rally'' at the Air Force Station, Kanpur on the occasion of the eighth Armed Forces Veterans’ Day, the defence minister called 1971 war as a golden chapter of humanity.
Giving a boost to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday unveiled the crest of Yard 12706 (Imphal), the third amongst the four Project 15B stealth guided missile destroyers, at a ceremony here.
The defence minister said a strong and self-reliant military besides protecting the borders, safeguarded the country’s civilisation and culture.
The defence minister’s meeting with the US Secretary of Defence will be held on 5 June while talks with the German minister will take place the next day.
Terming the region as an important aspect of India’s maritime security, Rajnath said: “The growing regional and global trade in this region has brought forth new challenges. Geopolitical tensions and a clash of strategic interests have led to traditional security challenges. Terrorism, drug trafficking and piracy are some non-traditional challenges in front of us today. The entire region is being affected by these challenges.''
The defence minister was launching two frontline warships of the Indian Navy–‘Surat’ and ‘Udaygiri’- at Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
Singh also said the Central government is making all efforts to provide the required support to the BRO in this direction.
The Defence Minister commended the Navy on the commissioning of major Naval units since the last Commander's Conference namely INS Visakhapatnam, the first ship of the P15B project, the fourth P75 submarine INS Vela and the Navy's second P8I squadron INAS 316 at INS Hansa, Goa.
These weapons and platforms are planned to be indigenised progressively with effect from December 2022 to December 2027. These 101 items will, henceforth, be procured from local sources as per provisions of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020.
