The Chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’ echoed the recommendations of the Ram Nath Kovind-led committee.
While former law minister P P Chaudhury chairs the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 'One Nation, One Election', the panel was constituted under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind.
The two former CJIs appeared before the JPC to present their views on the proposed legislation.
The minister shared his support for unified elections while attending an event organised by the Democratic Teachers’ Forum at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Janpath, New Delhi.
The committee, chaired by senior parliamentarian P P Choudhary, the chairperson, and other committee members, was accorded a traditional welcome by the Chief Minister.
As per the list of business, Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The Bill on the simultaneous polls for the lower house and the assemblies, once cleared by both houses of Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, will become a law.
The resolution, moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister MB Rajesh on behalf of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, criticized the proposal submitted by the high-level panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
He described the entire proposal as ‘a move to satisfy the BJP’s ego and asserted that Indian democracy cannot be bent to suit the greed of one party’.
Chief Minister Vijayan said the Union Government has a hidden agenda behind its decision to implement 'one nation, one election' in the country.
