The Economic Offences Wing of Odisha police busted a major Ponzi scam to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore spread across the country with arresting one of the operators on the charge of having deceived more than Rs 92 lakh lifetime savings of a senior citizen.
Scammers used morphed photographs of celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata and Sachin Tendulkar as a ploy to deceive people.
“It is the latest form of cyber financial fraud. EOW has for the first time unearthed such a cybercrime by arresting the fraudster Karan Kumar Singh, a resident of Sec-19, Noida, Uttar Pradesh,” said EOW DIG.
The arrested person had developed nine websites, used to entice youths for government jobs and duped hefty sums.
The EOW probed into an allegation of Sakti Prasad Dash of Bhubaneswar regarding the harassment, extortion, mental torture by the recovery agents of the digital loan app “Kredit Gold” by sending the humiliating, abusive messages and morphed photographs, it said.
Earlier two more fraudsters involved in the fake loan app scam have been taken into custody.
