For the second time, the accused in the Beldanga case could not be produced before the NIA Special Court, allegedly due to the absence of police escort despite court directions.
The court, while awarding the sentence to the accused, Ran Singh, also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him in the case related to the seizure of high-quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) having a face value of Rs 94,000.
All these sentences will run concurrently for a maximum of 10 years of RI. The accused also faces a fine of Rs 5,000, with 6 months of additional sentence in the event of default in payment.
With this, a total of six accused have so far been convicted and sentenced in the case, relating to spying at vital installations and Indian Navy establishments by foreign spies/agents with the intent to threaten its unity, integrity, security and sovereignty.
The charge sheet was filed on Wednesday before the NIA Special Court in Bengaluru, Karnataka under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Arms Act.
