The Saudi Foreign Minister made the remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, adding that he was glad the region has "avoided any escalation" with Iran, and "many countries" have offered to mediate talks with Tehran.
Iran has already taken three separate calibrated steps away from the deal and has warned it will take a fourth in November unless the US lifts economic sanctions.
Secretary of State Pompeo said the US would not hesitate to hit back hard against Iran's 'kleptocratic regime' if it came under attack, but pledged that any action would be consistent with the rule of law.
As for the regional and international issues, their talks will focus on the latest developments on the Iranian nuclear programme, the Syrian settlement, developments in the Gulf area, among others.
Zarif once again reiterated the Islamic Republic’s policy for supporting the Yemeni people, saying, “Iran will always stand by the Yemeni nation and we believe that the end of the war will first of all help the Yemeni people.”
Iran-US relations hit a new low last year as US Trump pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed unilateral sanctions that had been lifted in exchange for Tehran scaling back its nuclear programme.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif acknowledged that Iran had also opened a dialogue with the Taliban but said that the US push for a deal with the extremists was "seriously wrong".
Regretfully, Mr Zarif has been the object of the hardliners’ sniping, which has on occasion gone beyond mere criticism.
Zarif’s visit is taking place close on the heels of India taking over operations at the Chabahar port that provides New Delhi a critical link to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.
"What expectations could you have from a person who pulls out from international engagement and now says let's hold talks," Ravanchi said.
