The Judges Inquiry Committee constituted to examine allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma on Monday submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at Parliament House, marking an important development in the statutory process related to judicial accountability.
“Even the Prime Minister must obtain permission from the Speaker before delivering a speech,” Birla said, responding to accusations from Opposition members that the Chair had been partial in allowing discussions in the House.
“Ambedkar said the Speaker is the head of the House; Parliament has always come out on top,” Prasad said, stressing that parliamentary traditions must be respected by all members.
Sources said the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has agreed to support the opposition’s no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker.
The Opposition has moved a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, with sources indicating the discussion could take place on March 9 during the Budget Session.
“Transparency in decision-making fosters public trust, while inclusivity ensures that every voice — especially those on the margins of society — is heard and respected,” Birla said, adding that together these principles “sustain the legitimacy of democratic institutions and strengthen the enduring bond between the citizen and the state.”
“So many MPs and legal experts, but no one pointed this out?” Justice Datta remarked during the hearing, expressing surprise over the procedural lapse highlighted in the petition.
Addressing the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Barbados, Birla emphasized the importance of cooperation and knowledge-sharing in unlocking technology's true potential.
"Debates should be based on facts and ideas, not just accusations and counter-allegations," he said while inaugurating the 11th Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region.
